Penang City

- Penang city is more or less Georgetown which hasn’t become more pretty in recent years with all the high rise buildings.

For some this are built-up dreams along asphalt paved highways. The best time at Penang City comes in the evening when the air gets cooler and the winds from the Andaman Sea clean the atmosphere from the pollution of the cars. It gets dark, the sky show red and the people leave the old houses at Chinatown to have dinner at the restaurants, the open air food courts or the street food from the hawker. The tourists leave the hotels and have a little sightseeing tour at Penang downtown. There are plenty of Penang City hotels of all variants, cheap hotel Penang, expensive hotels, luxury hotels and budget hotels. Some of those are Parkroyal Penang, Cititel Penang, Eastern and Oriental Hotel Penang among others on the high end and others are e.g the Regal Malaysia Hotel are budget hotels or cheap hotels for about Ringits 80,-. There are dozens of more hotels at Georgetown and at the Penang Beaches.

The sea and the Penang Bridge turns anthracite and the beer starts flowing at the downtown pubs and bars. There are plenty of  Europeans and others having their drink in one of the bars. Malaysia is actively promoting Penang with the slogan ..retire in Malaysia.. and they are quite successful since more and more people come in from the cold of Europe and elsewhere to find a great place, not expensive and endless summer.
There are plenty of senior singles of both genders who live their remaining years in style and the idea of a postcolonial romance.

There are also plenty of tourists from China having a good time around the very pretty renovated old Chinese houses which are all demolished at places such as Shanghai in China, at Penang they restore them, mostly in the downtown area.

Chinese tourist flock in at the food courts and have a little dance at the open area in the center, they do waltz and foxtrot. The musician replaced a whole orchestra with the keyboard and …are you lonesome tonight.. fills the air. They all come from the Penang hotels nearby.

The high-rise buildings at Georgetown such as the Komtar Tower and some other places at the north coast are probably the most efficient way to bring as many as possible people into the square meters, it somehow reminds a little bit to the vertical holiday villages of the Costa Blanca in Spain.

A kind of megalomania since the available area at Penang and in particular in the city is finite. Land area between sea and mountains is small and expensive, means the high-rise seems to be the smartest kind of architecture and the higher the gravity, the more magnificent view is certain, at the highest Penang City apartment buildings it is said one can see Langkawi on a clear day. The people who mostly book the apartment in this high rise buildings are mostly tourists from the Arab peninsular.
